How Ford Explorer Keys Have Changed Over 30 Years
PATS Transponder Era
This is where security got serious. Ford introduced the PATS immobilizer on the Explorer, using a Texas 4C transponder chip embedded in a standard metal key. No buttons, no remote, just a chip inside the key head that talks to your ignition. Without the right chip signal, the engine will not start, period.
Remote Head Key Era
This is where security got a convenience upgrade. Ford combined the transponder and the remote into one unit, giving you a remote head key with a Texas 4D63 chip and three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. The PATS II system now required OBD-II programming for all-keys-lost situations, so a professional tool became necessary if you lost everything.
Flip Key Era
This is where security got serious about the blade itself. Ford switched to a high-security key profile that cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. The Texas 4D transponder chip paired with PATS III means both the cut and the programming have to be exact. You need a specialized cutter and an OBD-II scan tool to make this key work.
Smart Key Era
This is where security got layered. Your Explorer moved to push-button start with a proximity smart key carrying a Texas 4D63 (80-bit) chip. The key stays in your pocket while the car authenticates it wirelessly. Programming requires server authorization through Ford, which means professional equipment with internet connectivity is mandatory.
Advanced Smart Key Era
This is where security got its tightest. The sixth-generation Explorer uses SecuriCode plus PATS with an ID47 HITAG Pro chip and full proximity entry. There is no traditional blade for daily use. Programming requires server authentication and dealer-level tools, making this the most locked-down Explorer key system Ford has ever built.
Which Key Does Your Explorer Use?
A metal key with a chip hidden inside the plastic head. It looks like a regular key, but the engine will not start without the transponder signal.
Your lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built right into the key. One piece to carry instead of a separate remote clipped to your keychain.
The blade folds into the fob body when you are not using it. The high-security cut means only a locksmith with the right cutter can duplicate it.
This fob stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button, and go. There is a hidden laser-cut blade inside for emergencies.
Full proximity entry and push-button start. The emergency blade is tucked inside the fob and only comes out if your battery dies.

Common Ford Explorer Key Problems
PATS Module Failure
The transceiver ring around the ignition reads the transponder; when it fails the car thinks no key is present. We scan the ring first, then swap the module and reprogram on the spot. Common on 1996-2010 Explorers parked in Simi Valley summers.
Key Blade Wear
We check blade depth and spacing before assuming anything electronic. A worn blade mimics an ignition fault because the wafers stop engaging. Shallow cut? Fresh VIN key cut and programmed on the spot. Common on 2006-2010 high-security blades.
Fob Battery Drain
Explorer fob keeps dying within weeks of a fresh battery. Cracked case letting moisture in or a short on the board. We see it a lot on 2011-2019 smart keys dropped on concrete. We test the fob's current draw and tell you if it is a shell or a full replacement.
Server Auth Lockout
Failed server auth can lock the BCM on 2011+ Explorers when programming is interrupted. We carry the tools to reset BCM and finish auth; 2018+ Security Gateway models need a dealer reset and we say so upfront before rolling to Oxnard.
Can You Program a Ford Explorer Key Yourself?
If you already have two working keys, yes. Insert the first key, turn to RUN, turn off, remove it, then insert the new key within 15 seconds and turn to RUN. The security light flashes twice to confirm. If you have lost all keys, you need a locksmith with a PATS programmer and your PIN code.
Same deal: you need two working keys to add a third yourself. The process is similar but includes a 15-minute security light cycle at the end. If you are down to one key or zero keys, this procedure will not work and you need professional OBD-II programming.
Still possible with two working keys using the same on-board method. The PATS III system on these years also accepts the two-key add. But the high-security blade still needs to be cut by a locksmith, so even if you can program the chip yourself, you cannot cut the key at home.
No DIY option here. The push-button start smart key requires OBD-II programming with Ford server authorization. You need a professional with the right tools and software subscription. We handle this on-site in about 25 to 45 minutes.
Same situation as the fifth gen, but tighter. The SecuriCode plus PATS system requires advanced OBD-II programming with cloud connectivity and Ford proprietary software. No consumer workaround exists for these years.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 1996 Ford Explorer was one of the first vehicles to bring Ford's PATS immobilizer system to North America. That little transponder chip inside the key head reduced Explorer theft rates by over 70% in the early model years. It was such a success that Ford rolled PATS out across nearly every model in the lineup within a few years.
