Up in Mission Canyon, the roads get narrow and the driveways get steep. I got a call from a woman who had parked on the incline outside her place and come back to find her only key to her 2025 Ford Explorer completely dead.
No lock response, no unlock, nothing. She was pressing the fob against the door handle the way people do when they've already given up on it working.
She'd had the Explorer about a year. Bought it with one key, figured she'd get a spare cut eventually. She never did.
When I got there and looked at the fob, the CR2450 had been in it since she bought the car. Battery voltage was nearly gone. But here's where it got more interesting: even after I seated a fresh CR2450, the fob wasn't pairing correctly. The vehicle security system had lost its association with the key, probably because the fob had been running on a dead cell long enough that something got scrambled on the communication side.
So this turned into a proper key registration job. Diagnostic equipment in through the OBD port, re-enrolled the existing fob, verified the vehicle security system accepted it, then walked every button and both door handle sensors before I packed up. Lock, unlock, and the other three buttons all confirmed. Touch unlock on both front handles working.
She asked if she should get a second key made while I was standing there. That's always the right call. I made one on site. Two keys, both enrolled, both tested. She'd been living on borrowed time with one fob for a year. Mission Canyon is not the neighborhood where you want to be locked out after dark.
The dealer had quoted her a wait and a price that made her pause when she called them first. She told me the number. I told her she'd gotten a fair shake going the other route.
