She was parked in a lot off Madera Road, Mountclef Ridge side of Simi Valley, bags of groceries in the back seat and July heat doing what July heat does. The frozen stuff had maybe thirty minutes. She pressed the fob button. Nothing. Pressed it again standing closer to the car. Still nothing. She could see the Explorer sitting right there.
She called the dealer first. Earliest slot was the next afternoon. She called me and I told her I was about twenty minutes out.
When I got there, the fob was completely unresponsive. The emergency insert blade still worked, so she had gotten in, but the push-button start wasn't seeing the fob at all. I pulled the fob apart right on the hood. The CR2032 was reading nearly zero volts. That alone explained the start failure. But the internals also had some corrosion on the battery contacts, the kind that builds up when a low battery sits in there for a long time and starts to weep.
Fresh cell, cleaned contacts, back together. Still not syncing properly. At that point I connected to the OBD port and re-enrolled the fob to the immobilizer. Ran through all five buttons, checked the touch-unlock on both front handles, confirmed the start button was reading the key at normal range from the driver seat.
Engine running, frozen groceries intact, total time under fifty minutes from her call. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a figure that made her pause. The difference between that and what she paid me was a good chunk of money back in her pocket, and she didn't have to leave the car overnight.
