Got a call at 6:45 in the morning from a construction worker over near Mountain Gate Plaza in Simi Valley. His 2010 Explorer was sitting in the job site lot, totally dead to him. He said the remote stopped locking and unlocking, and when he turned the key the theft light on the dash just blinked and the engine would not crank. His shift started at 7. His foreman was already walking the site.
I keep my van loaded and rolling by 6am. Made it to him in about 25 minutes.
First thing I noticed: the CR2032 in his OUCD6000022 remote head key was corroded. Green crust on one of the battery terminals inside the fob housing. That killed the remote functions, but it should not have stopped the engine from starting. The transponder chip is passive, it does not need the battery. So I connected through OBD and pulled PATS codes. Got a B1601, which is a PATS received incorrect key code. The PCM had flagged the key out after a string of failed attempts earlier that week when the remote was acting up and he had been jamming it in and out of the ignition.
Cleared the code, re-registered his key through PATS, swapped the CR2032, cleaned the battery contacts in the fob. Hands-on time was about 20 minutes. Cut him a spare 164-R8070 for the glovebox too, programmed on the spot.
He clocked in at 7:15. Dealer would have meant a tow, a wait for parts, and a missed day of work.
