A guy near the Camarillo Library had been hiking one of the trails off the main road. Somewhere between the trailhead and the turnaround, his only key to a 2005 Ford Explorer slipped out of his shorts pocket. Gone.
He texted me a GPS pin. I loaded the van with the right blank, an OUCD6000022 remote head shell with the 4D-63 80-bit chip and an HU101 blade, and drove to his pin.
His Explorer was sitting in a dirt pulloff, no shade, windows up. I decoded the door lock wafers, cut the HU101 blade on my mobile machine right on the tailgate, and then started the PATS side. I connected through the OBD-II port, backed up the immobilizer data from the PCM as a precaution, erased the old lost key so it could never start the car, and programmed the new 4D-63 chip. The system ran its ten-minute security countdown. That part is Ford's timer, not mine, and there is no way around it.
After the countdown cleared, he turned the key, the theft light flickered once and went out, and the 4.0 V6 fired right up in that same dirt lot.
He kept looking at the trail like the old key might walk back to him. It did not. But he drove home with a working key built on-site, for a fraction of what a dealer plus tow truck would have run him from that kind of location.
