2023 Ford Explorer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Ford's roadside assistance told me to tow the Explorer to the dealer since I have no keys. Do I have to?

That's the dealer's preferred route, not the only one. Mobile locksmiths with the right Ford-compatible diagnostic tools can handle an all-keys-lost job at your location. No tow required. Owners who've gone the dealer path report multi-day waits and costs that add up fast once you factor in towing, OEM fobs, and labor. We bring the equipment to your vehicle and do the entire job on site, same day.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job on the 2023 Explorer actually take?

Plan for 45 minutes to an hour on site. The vehicle security system on this generation Explorer enforces a timed security delay during the key-erase and re-enrollment process. That delay is built into the system and can't be skipped. Once we're through it, programming the new fobs and verifying everything works across the doors, the handle sensors, and the start button takes another 15 to 20 minutes. Dealer timelines on all-keys-lost jobs are a different story.

Q: My 2023 Explorer fob works fine from a distance but the door handle touch unlock is hit or miss. Is that a key problem?

Probably not the fob itself. If the push-button start still sees the key and the lock and unlock buttons work at normal range, the fob is doing its job. Intermittent touch-unlock on one or two handles is more often a handle sensor issue or a connection at that door than anything wrong with the key. Try this first: wipe the handle area clean, especially around the sensor zone on the back of the handle.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Explorer. Can I just program it myself?

No. The 2023 Explorer smart key system doesn't have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There's no ignition-cycle trick, no button combination. Pairing a new fob requires diagnostic equipment that talks directly to the vehicle security system through the OBD port. If you already bought the fob, it's not a loss as long as the fob is the correct one for this vehicle. We can pair it on site.

2023 Ford Explorer Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy staying with friends in College Estates in Oxnard called me about a spare key for his 2023 Explorer. He wasn't locked out. He just wanted a backup he could trust as a real daily driver key, not something he'd fish out of a junk drawer if things went sideways.

His first question was direct: "Is it going to be as good as what Ford sells?"

I told him the honest version. The factory fob comes in factory packaging with the Ford logo stamped on the housing. That's a real thing and there's a real markup that goes with it. What I carry is a properly spec'd aftermarket blank built to the same dimensions, the same button travel, the same circuit board layout. The key blade gets cut on my machine to the same profile as the original. When it's programmed and in his hand, the car doesn't know the difference.

I walked him through the pairing on site, right in the driveway. The vehicle security system recognized the new fob without a fight. He tested the door handles, the lock and unlock, the push-button start. Everything behaved the way it was supposed to.

He asked again near the end, almost to himself: "So it's actually the same thing."

Pretty much, yeah. Minus the logo and a good chunk of money.

Ford Explorer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2023 Explorer. Can you make a new one without the original?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the 2023 Explorer is a job we handle on site. The process requires professional diagnostic equipment to communicate with the vehicle security system, erase the lost fobs from memory, and enroll new ones from scratch. The old keys come out of the system entirely, so a lost fob can't be used to start the car later.
