How the Freestar Key System Evolved
First Generation (Pre-Facelift)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your Freestar uses a 5-button remote head key with a Texas 4D63 transponder chip and Ford's PATS SecuriLock immobilizer. The remote buttons handle locks, liftgate, and sliding doors, but the transponder chip that actually starts the engine needs professional tools to program.
First Generation (Facelift)
On-board programming carries over here with no surprises. Ford kept the same Texas 4D63 chip, the same PATS SecuriLock system, and the same 5-button remote head key with a standard blade. Minor part number updates happened under the hood, but from a key standpoint, your 2006 or 2007 works exactly like the earlier models.
Which Key Does Your Freestar Use?
This is a single piece: the metal key blade and the remote buttons are built into one unit. Five buttons control your locks, liftgate, and sliding doors.
Same key design as the earlier Freestar. The blade, chip, and remote are all identical across the full 2004 to 2007 range, so parts are easy to source.
What to Expect Price-Wise

Us vs. the Dealer
Over 1,000 five-star Google reviews say more than any comparison chart, but here are the numbers anyway.
Common Freestar Key Problems
RKE Programming Timing Failures
Most "dead fob" calls in Oxnard and Simi Valley are programming-procedure failures. Eight ignition turns in ten seconds; off by a couple and the whole thing resets silently. A stopwatch helps; if it still will not take, the receiver module needs attention.
Fuse #17 Faults
First thing we check when Freestar remote buttons quit: fuse #17 in the instrument panel. Blown fuse cuts power to the RKE receiver, the doors will not cycle during programming, and no amount of retrying fixes it. Fuse swap and you are back.
Transponder Key Lockouts
PATS SecuriLock needs a programmed transponder chip to start. Separate from the remote buttons. Skip the transponder step and the buttons work but the van will not fire. Catches Thousand Oaks owners with aftermarket fobs constantly.
Can You Program It Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using the ignition cycle method. But the transponder chip that lets the engine start requires professional PATS tools. So you can DIY the remote functions, but you will still need us for the ignition side.
Same deal as the earlier models. Remote button programming works on-board with precise ignition cycling. Transponder programming for engine start still needs pro equipment. If you lost all your keys, skip the DIY attempt and call us directly.

Did You Know?
The Ford Freestar shared its on-board key programming procedure with the Lincoln Blackwood, a rare luxury pickup truck that Ford only produced for two model years. Fewer than 3,400 Blackwoods were ever built, making it one of the rarest Ford vehicles to use the same PATS ignition cycle method as your family minivan.
