2007 Ford Freestar Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A construction worker called me at 6:45 in the morning from a site near Silverstrand Beach in Oxnard. His shift started at 7 and his 2007 Freestar would not turn over. The remote buttons were dead and the key just cranked with no start. His foreman was already walking around.
I keep my van loaded and rolling by 6am. I was on site in about 25 minutes.
First thing I noticed: the CR2032 in his OUCD6000022 remote head key was corroded. Green crust on one of the battery contacts. That killed the remote side, but it should not have killed the start. I connected through the OBD port under the dash and pulled PATS codes. The 4D63 transponder had dropped sync with the PCM. It happens on these when the battery gets low enough to throw noise into the RFID antenna ring around the ignition.
I cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and ran a PATS relearn to get the transponder talking to the PCM again. Then I cut and programmed a spare 164-R8070 so he would have a backup in the glovebox. Total hands-on time, maybe 20 minutes.
He clocked in at 7:15. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait for parts, and a missed day of work. He texted me that evening to say thanks. That was the whole conversation.
