A guy called me from the parking lot of a gas station near Carriage Square with half a key in his hand and the other half stuck in the ignition of his 2005 Ford Freestar. Road trip. Kids in the van. Not a great afternoon.
He'd tried to wiggle it out himself and made it worse. The broken piece was wedged in past the first wafer and the cylinder wouldn't turn far enough to get to accessory. He was stuck in a running-is-not-running situation and didn't want to force anything.
I got there and extracted the broken section without pulling the cylinder. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock right there, cut a new blade, and married it to a fresh remote head key housing. The transponder needed to be programmed to the vehicle's immobilizer, so I ran that through my tool. One security cycle and it took.
The whole fob was functional again. He tested the lock and unlock standing in the parking lot, tossed the bag back in the van, and they were moving within the hour.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a multi-day wait just to look at it. For a snapped key on a 2005 Freestar, that wait isn't necessary. It's a known job with a known process, and I carry what I need to handle it on site.
