How Ford Windstar Key Security Evolved
First Generation (Pre-facelift)
This is where Ford's security got serious for the minivan crowd. Your 1997 or 1998 Windstar uses a PATS I immobilizer with a Texas 4C transponder chip inside the key. It is a standard transponder key with no remote buttons built in, so the remote and the key are separate pieces.
First Generation (Facelift)
Ford combined the remote and the key into one piece here. Your 1999 or 2000 Windstar uses a remote head key with 3 buttons, still running the Texas 4C chip on the PATS I system. Same security backbone as the earlier models, just a more convenient package in your hand.
Second Generation
Ford bumped the security up to PATS II for the redesigned Windstar. Your key still uses the Texas 4D63 chip in a 3-button remote head key, but the PATS II system talks to the PCM differently. That means some programming scenarios need diagnostic tools rather than just the on-board procedure.
Which Key Does Your Windstar Use?
A metal key with a chunky plastic head that holds the transponder chip. Your remote is a separate fob that clips to the keyring.
The key and remote are combined into one unit. Three buttons on the back for lock, unlock, and panic. The transponder chip lives inside the key head.
Looks similar to the 1999-2000 key but works with the upgraded PATS II system. Same 3-button layout with the transponder chip embedded in the head.
How Much Does a Windstar Key Cost?
Price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; no hidden fees.

Common Ford Windstar Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
The Texas-platform transponder weakens or the antenna ring around the ignition corrodes. Either way PATS does not see the key and the engine will not start. Ring first, then chip. If the chip is dying we cut and program a fresh key on the spot.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Check the CR2032 first on every remote complaint: nine times out of ten that is it. The 1999-2003 Windstar remote head can burn batteries fast if buttons get pocket-pressed. New CR2032 is a couple of bucks and 30 seconds.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
Hit lock, nothing on one door, or a grinding noise from the sliding door. The actuator motor inside the panel has worn out. Mechanical, not a key problem. We confirm whether it is the key or the actuator so you know what you are actually dealing with.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
High-mileage 2001-2003 Windstars develop sticky cylinders: tumblers wear, the key sticks, and the engine refuses to crank. We tell key from cylinder in a few minutes and we will be straight with you about which one it is before you spend anything.
Can You Program a Windstar Key Yourself?
The 1997 Windstar does not have a self-programming procedure. You need professional PATS programming equipment, which is exactly what we bring on every call.
If you already have two working keys, you can program a third yourself using the Ford two-key procedure. You cycle the first key, then the second, then insert the new key within 10 seconds. Timing is tight, but it works.
Same two-key procedure as the 1998. You need both existing keys and a compatible blank with the correct Texas-platform chip. If you only have one key, or zero keys, you need us.
The two-key method still works on the second generation, but the PATS II system can be pickier. If the procedure fails, do not keep retrying. Each failed attempt can push the system deeper into a fault state. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will sort it out.
