1997 Ford Windstar
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made once you arrive?

For a 1997 Windstar, it's a short job. Decode the lock or work from the key code, cut the blank to match, done. No countdown timers, no security relearn sequence to sit through. On-car time is typically well under thirty minutes. The mechanical nature of this key is actually the whole reason the job moves fast.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Significantly faster, and I come to you. A dealer service lane has scheduling, parts availability, and shop workflow between you and a finished key. For a van this age, they may not stock the blank at all. I carry key blanks and cutting equipment in the service van. You don't tow the Windstar anywhere, and you're not waiting for a Thursday appointment.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't want to come out. Is the key the problem or the cylinder?

Could be either, and on a van this age it's often both working against each other at the same time. A worn key can develop small deformations along the blade that create friction in the cylinder wafers. That friction gets worse over time and can eventually leave the key stuck or make it feel like it's grinding. A freshly cut replacement key sometimes fixes the feel entirely. If a new cut still binds, the cylinder itself may need attention.

Q: I have the original key but it's so worn down I'm not sure it'll last. Can you copy it?

Yes, but a direct copy of a badly worn key just gives you a worn key in a new blank. The better move is decoding the lock so the replacement is cut to the original specification, not traced from a key that's already degraded. That way the copy actually works better than what you're carrying right now.

1997 Ford Windstar Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over in Blackstock, Oxnard. Her 1997 Windstar. She'd lost her only key and had been borrowing her neighbor's car for two days waiting to hear back from the dealer.

The dealer told her they'd need to look into sourcing a blank and that she should plan on leaving the van with them. She didn't have another way to get the van there, and they weren't coming to her. That's just how it goes with a dealer service lane.

I drove out to her place in Blackstock. The van was sitting in the driveway. I decoded the lock, sourced the right blank, and cut the key on site. Took maybe twenty minutes once I was there.

She turned it over on the first try. That's the whole story. No programming delays, no tow, no waiting for parts to arrive at a shop. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer was going to charge, and she didn't have to figure out how to get the van there in the first place.

Ford Windstar Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Windstar after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Ford dealer service departments keep regular business hours, and a 1997 Windstar isn't exactly the vehicle they're set up to prioritize on a busy Saturday morning. Sourcing the right blank can add time if they don't have one on hand. We work nights and weekends because that's when most people realize they need a key, and we come to you in Blackstock or wherever the van is sitting.
