How Contour Keys Changed Over the Years
PATS I Transponder Key
A transponder key with a Texas 4C chip embedded in the head. There is no remote, no buttons, just a standard blade with a chip inside that talks to Ford's first-generation Passive Anti-Theft System. Without the right chip signal, the engine will not start, even if the key turns the ignition.
PATS II Transponder Key
A transponder key with the same Texas-platform chip (upgraded to 4D63 40-bit for PATS II). The security handshake between key and car got smarter. On-board programming is still possible if you have two working keys, but if all keys are lost, we need to go through the PATS module directly with professional tools.
SVT Performance Variant
A transponder key identical to the standard 1999-2000 Contour, running the same PATS II system and Texas 4D63 chip. The SVT got the Duratec V6 and sportier suspension, but Ford did not change the key system. Same programming, same process, same result.
Which Key Does Your Contour Use?
A plain-looking key with a slightly thicker head. No buttons, no battery. The chip inside is what makes it work with your car's anti-theft system.
Looks identical to the 1997-1998 key, but the internal chip communicates with an upgraded PATS II immobilizer. You cannot swap a 1997 key into a 2000 Contour and expect it to start.
Same key as the standard 1999-2000 Contour. The SVT badge does not change the key system. Same chip, same programming.
The Real Cost of a Contour Key
Price includes key cutting, Texas-platform transponder chip, on-site PATS programming, and testing; all-keys-lost situations may be higher due to EEPROM work.
Us vs. the Dealer
Lost all your Contour keys? The dealer wants you to tow it in. We handle it in your driveway.
Common Contour Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
Engine cranks but will not fire, theft light flashing. The transponder chip in your Contour key has worn out, or the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is damaged. We test both on-site and replace whichever one is the culprit.
Lost All Keys Scenario
Contour PATS needs two working keys for on-board programming. No working keys means standard procedure is locked out. We carry EEPROM tools that go directly into the PATS module and program fresh keys from scratch in your driveway in Simi Valley.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
First thing we check on a high-mileage Contour is the ignition cylinder. After 150,000 miles the wafers wear and the key gets hard to insert. Pair that with a flaky transponder and you have a double whammy. Cylinder swap plus a fresh key in one visit.
PATS Light Flashing Rapidly
A rapidly flashing theft light is not a dead key battery: your Contour key has no battery. The rapid flash means the PATS module is throwing a fault code in the immobilizer chain. We plug in, pull the codes, and diagnose key, antenna ring, or module on-site.
Can You Program a Contour Key Yourself?
You can program a keyless entry remote yourself using the connector jump method behind the glove box. But the transponder key itself requires professional PATS programming equipment. The remote and the transponder are two separate systems.
Same deal as the earlier years. Remote programming is a DIY job with the connector jump method. Transponder key programming requires either two existing working keys for on-board programming or professional EEPROM tools if all keys are lost.
Identical to the standard 1999-2000 Contour. You can program remotes yourself, but transponder keys need professional equipment. The SVT does not add any extra security layers to the key system.
