A guy in the Fremont North neighborhood in Oxnard had been wrestling his 1999 Ford Contour ignition for a few weeks. Wiggling the key, pushing it in at an angle, sometimes just sitting there waiting for it to decide to turn. He finally got worried enough to call the Ford dealer. They quoted him for a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and reprogramming. He was ready to book it.
His buddy told him to call a locksmith first.
I drove out and looked at the cylinder. The 10-cut Ford lock on these Contours uses small brass wafers, and over twenty-plus years they wear thin and start catching. His cylinder was not dead. Just tired inside.
I backed up the PATS data with my programmer, decoded the existing lock, swapped out the worn wafers, and cut a fresh H72 transponder key matched to the repaired cylinder. Programmed the 4C chip to the PATS module right there on the street. Key turned clean, engine fired without a single theft light blink.
I showed him the old wafers side by side with the new ones so he could see the difference. Flat edges where there should have been stepped cuts. That is all it was.
He kept the car, kept his money, and did not replace a single part that was still working.
