1997 Ford Contour
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 1997 Ford Contour?

Call or text with your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right key blank for your Contour and give you a price before I head out. When I arrive, I cut the blade to your vehicle and program the transponder chip through the OBD port. If you have at least one working key with you, the process moves quicker.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, registration or title works. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify everything before I cut anything. That's the whole list. Same documents the dealer asks for, but you're doing it in your own parking spot instead of a service waiting room.

Q: My 1997 Contour cranks but won't stay running. Could it be the key?

Yes, that's a classic sign the immobilizer isn't recognizing the transponder in your key. The engine management system allows a brief crank, then shuts fuel or spark down when it doesn't get the right signal from the chip. It feels like a fuel or electrical problem, and a lot of owners chase those first and waste money. Before you replace anything under the hood, check whether the same thing happens with a different key if you have one.

Q: Can I get a replacement key cut at a hardware store or a kiosk and have it work?

It'll open the door. It won't start the car. The 1997 Contour needs the blade cut correctly and the transponder chip inside the key programmed to the vehicle's immobilizer. A hardware store kiosk or a basic locksmith cutting a standard blank gives you a key that works in every lock except the ignition.

1997 Ford Contour Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the Five Points area of Oxnard called me about her 1997 Ford Contour. She had one key left, it was worn down, and she wanted a spare before something went wrong. Sensible plan. She'd already called the Ford dealer and gotten a number that made her pause, and that was before they mentioned she'd need to bring the car in during service hours.

She was parked at her office lot when I showed up. I pulled the VIN, confirmed the key specs, cut the blade, and connected to the OBD port under the dash. The Contour's immobilizer setup from that era is one of the more cooperative ones to work with when you still have a functioning key in hand. The whole job was done in about twenty-five minutes. She had a working spare and never left her parking spot.

The dealer route would have meant scheduling, driving across town, waiting, and paying a good chunk more once you broke down their itemized list. She didn't do any of that.

Ford Contour Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1997 Ford Contour somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the car is, your driveway, your job, a parking lot in Five Points. Everything I need is in my van: the key blank, the cutter, and the programming equipment for the Contour's immobilizer system. Ford dealers want the car on their lot, during their hours, and if you're down to zero working keys, that usually means a tow. I handle it all on site, and you don't move the car.
