How Ford Secured Your EcoSport
Second Generation (North America)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a transponder chip inside talking to Ford's PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) every time you start the engine. If the chip does not authenticate, the engine will not fire. Higher trims got push-button start with a proximity smart key, while base S trims typically use a standard remote head key with a 3-button layout and CR2032 battery.
Which Key Does Your EcoSport Use?
Your EcoSport uses either a remote head key with a fold-out metal blade or a proximity smart key for push-button start, depending on your trim level. Both use a CR2032 battery and communicate with Ford's PATS immobilizer to authorize the engine to start.

Us vs. the Dealer
We are a local Ventura County business, not a service department that forgot your name. Same result, less hassle.
Common EcoSport Key Problems
Passive Key Battery Depletion
Fob buttons quit and the doors will not unlock: almost always a dead CR2032. Use the hidden metal blade to get in, hold the fob to the push-button start to fire. Swap the cell; still acting up, call (805) 790-8162. PATS may need a resync.
PATS Immobilizer System Failures
EcoSport cranks but will not fire and people blame the starter. Usually the PATS immobilizer is not recognizing a valid key after a battery disconnect or failed programming. We bring Ford-compatible tools and reprogram on-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Remote Keyless Entry System Malfunction
The internal antenna in the EcoSport's keyless entry receiver degrades and that causes intermittent lock/unlock failures. It is not always the fob. We test fob signal strength first, then check the vehicle receiver before recommending a new key.
Key Fob Housing Durability
Check the fob shell first. A cracked housing lets moisture reach the board and battery contacts, which causes intermittent starts, buttons that work sometimes, and shrinking range. New shell with your existing internals is quick and cheap.
Can You Program It Yourself?
If you already have two working keys, Ford's PATS system lets you program a third key yourself using a timed ignition sequence. You will need a properly cut blank with the correct transponder chip. No tools required, just precise timing.
The smart key version also supports self-programming if you have two working keys. You use the backup slot inside the center console and follow a specific button-press sequence. If you only have one key, or zero keys, you need a locksmith with diagnostic equipment.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport packs a dual-stage safety system with driver and passenger front airbags, knee airbags, and a Safety Canopy System providing curtain airbags for both rows. That is a serious amount of protection for a compact SUV running on a 1.0L EcoBoost engine that makes just 123 horsepower. Ford basically wrapped a subcompact in the kind of safety architecture you would expect from something twice its size.
