I got a call from someone parked near the Historic District in Oxnard. She had a 1998 Ford Contour and needed a spare made before a road trip. One key, no backup, and she'd already called the dealer.

The Contour's immobilizer reads the transponder in the key head and has to see a registered code before it'll allow the engine to run. Once the new key was enrolled, I had her start it herself so she knew it worked before I packed up.
She asked if the dealer would have charged more. I told her to think about what a tow would have cost if she'd ever been stranded without a spare. That was the real number worth thinking about.
