Got a call from a woman over in the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard. She had a 1998 Ford Contour sitting in her driveway with one key that was cracked right through the plastic head. The transponder chip inside was basically hanging on by luck. She'd been babying it for weeks, holding the two halves together every time she started the car.

I showed up with my programmer and a blank H72-PT key. Her Contour uses the PATS I system with a Texas Instruments 4C fixed-code transponder. These are actually pretty cooperative to work with because the code doesn't roll or encrypt the way later Ford systems do. I read the existing key, cut the new one to code on my mobile unit, and programmed the transponder through the PATS module. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes.
She turned the new key, the theft indicator on the dash did its normal prove-out and went dark, and the engine fired right up. She looked at the old cracked key sitting on the hood and just shook her head. Weeks of stress over something that took less time than a lunch break.
