How Ford Changed the F-350 Key System Over the Years
Fourth Generation (P8)
Your 2017 to 2019 F-350 uses a 3-button smart key with an ID47 transponder chip and Ford's PATS immobilizer. It is a push-button start system, and programming happens through the OBD-II port under your dash. Straightforward for us, no server connection needed, and we handle it right in your driveway.
Fourth Generation (P8) Facelift
Your 2020 to 2022 F-350 keeps the same 3-button smart key and ID47 chip, but Ford upgraded to SYNC 4 and added remote start capability on higher trims. Programming is still OBD-II based with the PATS system, so we can do everything on-site without any dealer server involvement. Same reliable process as the earlier P8 trucks.
Fifth Generation (P9)
Your 2023 to 2025 F-350 moved to the new P9 platform with FordPass Connect integration and a redesigned 3-button smart key using the ID47 chip. Here is the big change: Ford now requires server authentication during programming. That means we need a live connection to Ford's servers, which adds a step but we carry the equipment to handle it on-site in most cases.
Which Key Does Your F-350 Use?
A slim proximity fob with three buttons and a hidden high-security blade inside for emergencies. You keep it in your pocket and the truck detects it when you grab the door handle or press the start button.
Updated smart key design for the new generation F-350. Same 3-button layout and CR2032 battery, but this one communicates with Ford's servers during programming. Still has the hidden emergency blade tucked inside.

Common F-350 Key Problems We See
RTM Failure
First thing we check on a 2017-2022 F-350 that sees no keys is the Remote Transceiver Module. The RTM handles all smart-key-to-immobilizer comms; when it fails the truck acts like no key exists. We diagnose via OBD-II and confirm before any fix.
Transponder Sync Loss
After a battery swap or jump start, PATS can lose comms with your ID47 transponder. People call it a dead key; it is a sync issue. Fix is a full OBD-II relearn, about 20 minutes, and your existing key works again.
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2020-2025 F-350 fob dies every few weeks instead of lasting a year. Common on Super Duty diesels: proximity constantly polls and burns through the CR2032. Check for aftermarket accessories on the signal and do not store the fob near electronics.
Immobilizer Antenna Fault
On 2017-2019 F-350s the ring antenna around the ignition fails from vibration and age. Key works in the door but the truck refuses to start, security light flashing, PATS sees no transponder. Common on high-mileage work trucks in Oxnard and Camarillo.
Can You Program an F-350 Key Yourself?
If you already have two programmed smart keys, you can add a third one yourself using Ford's built-in two-key procedure. Place each existing key in the backup slot, press the start button in sequence, then do the same with the new key. Timing matters, so follow each step carefully.
The same two-key procedure works on the P9 generation. You need two existing programmed smart keys to add a new one. However, if you have lost all your keys, the 2023 and newer models require Ford server authentication, which means professional equipment is mandatory.

Did You Know?
The Ford F-350 Super Duty uses SecuriLock PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System), a technology Ford introduced back in 1996. The system reads your key's transponder chip using an electromagnetic field generated by the ignition coil, which means the transponder works without any battery power in the key itself. Nearly three decades later, PATS is still the backbone of Ford truck security.
