Out in Rancho Conejo, I got a call from a guy with a 2025 F-350 that had been giving him grief for about two weeks. He described it as the truck being moody.
Some mornings the remote would work from across the parking lot. Other mornings he had to stand next to the door handle before the lock would respond. And twice in one week the dash threw a key-not-detected warning when he got in, even though the fob was right in his hand.
He had already bought a replacement fob online. It was sitting in the original packaging, unopened, on the passenger seat when I got there.
I started with the existing fob. Opened it up on the hood. The CR2032 tested fine on voltage, but when I pressed it, there was a slight give. The positive contact had a small outward bow, just enough that the cell wasn't making solid contact under vibration. With a truck that spends time on job sites, that kind of micro-movement is enough to cause exactly what he was describing.
I reset the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and we walked through every button. Lock, unlock, the remaining two buttons, all of them. Consistent response from a normal distance. We ran it through a few cycles, locked the truck, walked away, came back. No warnings.
He looked at the unopened fob on the seat and kind of laughed. Didn't need it. The existing key was fine.
But I left him with the information: if it comes back, the replacement fob he bought still needs professional programming equipment to pair to the truck. It won't self-enroll. So he's got a head start when that day comes, and he knows who to call.
The dealer's estimate for diagnosing and replacing the fob had been a lot. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he kept his original programmed key.
