North Ranch neighborhood contractor called about his 2023 F-350. Smart key wouldn't unlock the doors from more than three feet away. Had to practically touch the handle.
He'd already changed the CR2450 twice. Still weak range. I pulled up to his jobsite with the Autel IM608 and ran a quick scan. No DTCs, but the signal strength test showed -85 dBm at the driver door antenna. Should be -65 or better.
Popped the fob open on his tailgate. The M3N-A3C108397 board looked fine, but the battery contact spring had lost its tension. Common on these after a couple years of pocket duty. The spring barely touched the battery.
Quick fix: bent the contact back to proper tension, cleaned the terminals with DeoxIT. Signal jumped to -62 dBm. Now the truck unlocked from twenty feet like it should.
While testing, he mentioned the dealer wanted him to drop the truck off for three days just to diagnose. They'd need to order the key blank first, then program, then test. All that downtime for what turned out to be a five-minute contact adjustment. He kept his truck, kept working, and it cost him a fraction of the dealer route.
