How Ford Secured Your Five Hundred
First Generation (D258)
A remote head key with a standard blade, three buttons, and a transponder chip inside the plastic housing. Ford used their PATS immobilizer system with a Texas 4D63 (80-bit) chip, which means the car will not start unless it recognizes the specific chip programmed to your vehicle. The system stayed identical across all three model years, so whether you have a 2005 or a 2007, the key and programming process are exactly the same.
Which Key Does Your Five Hundred Use?
This is a traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head that has lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built in. The transponder chip lives inside the plastic, so even if the remote buttons die, the key still starts the car.

Common Five Hundred Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
Key in, turn, nothing. Quick crank or a flashing theft light, no start. Usually the PATS antenna ring around the cylinder has failed, or the transponder chip is weak. We test with a known-good key first to isolate key from antenna before recommending work.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Ford's integrated remote head on the Five Hundred runs lock/unlock/trunk on the CR2032 but the transponder chip needs no power. So the remote dies while the key still starts the car. Pop it open with a coin, drop a fresh CR2032 positive up.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Check the blade first. A worn key is cheaper than a worn cylinder and is the more common culprit on Five Hundreds over 100,000 miles. Blade fine and the key still sticks? Cylinder wafers are worn. We extract and cut a fresh key on-site in Simi Valley.
Can You Program a Five Hundred Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using Ford's 8-cycle ignition method. But the transponder chip that actually lets the car start cannot be self-programmed. That requires professional OBD-II tools and your vehicle's PATS security code.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Ford Five Hundred's SecuriLock PATS system was one of the first widespread Ford immobilizers to use encrypted transponder chips for theft deterrence. It shared this technology with the Ford Taurus platform, which means the security architecture in your Five Hundred was part of Ford's broader push to make ignition bypass theft significantly harder across their entire sedan lineup.
