How Ford Ranger Keys Changed Over the Years
Second Generation Late Models
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but some 1997 Rangers came with Ford's brand new PATS I immobilizer and a Texas 4C transponder chip hidden inside the key head. Others from this transition year are purely mechanical with no chip at all. We check your ECM for the PATS indicator light to know exactly which setup you have before we cut anything.
Third Generation (Facelift)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other standard key, but there is a transponder chip inside the plastic head that talks to your truck's PATS I or PATS II system every time you start it. These Rangers use a Texas 4C (PATS I, 1998-1999) or Texas 4D63 chip (PATS II onward) depending on the exact year. On-board programming works if you already have two keys, which makes adding a spare straightforward and affordable.
Fourth Generation (North America Return)
Ford brought the Ranger back to the U.S. with a completely different key system. Your 2019 to 2023 Ranger uses a smart proximity fob with an ID47 HITAG Pro chip, a high-security laser-cut emergency blade, and PATS IV/SecuriLock immobilizer protection. Programming requires OBD-II access plus Ford server authentication, so this is not a DIY job.
Fifth Generation
Ford tightened security again with SecuriLock Enhanced on the newest Rangers. Your 2024 or 2025 model uses an ID49 HITAG Pro AES chip in a smart proximity fob with a high-security blade. Programming requires Ford server authentication, and we will be straight with you about whether we can handle your specific situation on-site or if dealer involvement is needed.
Which Key Does Your Ranger Use?
A simple metal key with no buttons. Some 1997 models have a Texas 4C transponder chip inside the head for PATS I, while others are purely mechanical. We test yours on-site to confirm.
A traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head containing a transponder chip. The three-button remote handles lock, unlock, and panic. This is the most common Ranger key we see.
A push-button-start fob that stays in your pocket. It has a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic.
Similar fob to the 2019-2023 models but with upgraded SecuriLock Enhanced encryption. Still uses a CR2032 battery and includes a hidden emergency blade.
Ranger Key Replacement Pricing
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95-$125 and is separate from key replacement.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Lost every key to your Ranger? The dealer wants a tow and a week. We handle all-keys-lost on-site for most generations.
Common Ford Ranger Key Problems
PATS Transponder Failure
Key in, theft light flashes instead of going solid, Ranger will not start. The transponder chip in the key head has degraded or the antenna ring has failed; PATS cannot read your key. We test both on-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Key Fob Battery Drain
2019-2023 Ranger fob looks broken but usually a stuck button or poor battery contact kills the CR2032 in days. Push-button start stops responding. We check the internals first; if the board is fine a new battery and quick clean solves it for under $20.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
High-mileage 1998-2012 Rangers develop worn cylinders. Wafers get sloppy, the key gets hard to turn, and even forced, PATS may not read the transponder because the key sits at an angle. We rebuild or replace the cylinder and reprogram in one visit.
PIN Code Lockout
Before we touch a Ranger key we check for ECM lockout: a failed programming attempt locks the ECM against further tries on 2007+ models. A dealer-level reset or module dump clears it. We carry the diagnostics in Thousand Oaks or Camarillo so you skip the tow.
Can You Program a Ford Ranger Key Yourself?
If your 1997 Ranger has PATS and you still have two working keys, you can add a new one yourself using the Ford two-key procedure. No working keys means you need professional equipment.
Yes, you can add a key yourself if you have two programmed keys already. Insert the first key, turn to ON, remove it, insert the second within 10 to 15 seconds, then insert the new key. The security light confirms success. No existing keys? That requires OBD-II programming and a locksmith.
DIY programming is not supported on these models. The smart key system uses encrypted communication with PATS IV/SecuriLock that requires professional OBD-II tools and Ford server authentication.
SecuriLock Enhanced encryption means no self-programming option exists. These require Ford server authentication and professional-grade equipment.

Did You Know?
The Ford Ranger was one of the first American pickups to get the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) back in 1996 and 1997. Ford embedded encrypted transponder chips in the key heads specifically to prevent hot-wiring, which had been a major problem with older trucks. It was a quiet revolution in pickup truck security that most Ranger owners never even knew was there.
