1997 Ford Ranger
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 1997 Ranger?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the right blank for your truck and tell you the price before I ever leave my van. When I get there, I either pull the key code from the VIN through a code database or decode your lock directly. From there I cut the key, test it in the ignition and door, and hand it to you. The whole thing usually runs well under 30 minutes on site.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, your registration or title works. I pull the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb to verify everything before I cut anything. That's it. I keep it to one visit with no back-and-forth.

Q: My 1997 Ranger key is worn and starts slipping in the ignition. Do I just need a new key cut, or is something wrong with the ignition cylinder?

Probably both, and it's worth knowing which before cutting a new key. On trucks this age, the ignition wafers wear down over time, especially if the original key has been worn smooth from years of use. A worn key accelerates that wafer wear because it's no longer hitting the tumblers cleanly. If I cut a new key to the original code and the cylinder still slips or feels rough, the cylinder itself may be the next step.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 1997 Ranger if I've lost every key?

Yes, all-keys-lost on a 1997 Ranger is a routine job. Because this is a mechanical key, I either decode one of the locks directly or run the key code from the VIN through a code database. Either way gets me to the correct cut without needing an existing key to copy. I bring the blank, cut it on site, and test it in both the ignition and the door before I leave.

1997 Ford Ranger Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone out near Faria Beach in Ventura. Her 1997 Ranger was her daily driver, and she was down to zero keys after her last one snapped off in the door lock.

The blade had corroded just enough at the shoulder that it gave out under normal use. Older trucks see that a lot, especially ones that live near the coast where the salt air gets into everything.

She'd called the dealer first. They told her to bring it in, which meant arranging a tow since she had no working key. The timeline they gave her was not a same-day thing.

I drove out to her place with the right blank for her Ranger and my code cutter in the van. Pulled the VIN, ran the code, and cut two keys right there in her driveway. Tested both in the ignition and the door. Done.

No tow, no wait, no rental. She had a working key and a spare before lunch. The dealer never really came up again after that.

Ford Ranger Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1997 Ford Ranger somewhere for a key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Wherever the truck is in Ventura, whether that's your driveway near Faria Beach, a job site, or a parking lot, I show up with the blank and the equipment to cut a working key on the spot. The dealer needs the vehicle in their service bay, which means towing it if you have no key. That adds time and money before the key work even starts.
