Got a call from a woman near Harry A. Lyon Park in Ventura. She had a 1997 Ranger, single cab, XLT trim. Her only key had a crack running through the bow and the blade was so worn you could barely read the cuts. She said the dealer told her to bring the truck in for a new key, cut and programmed.
Here is the thing. There is nothing to program on a 1997 Ranger. Ford did not introduce PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) on the Ranger until 1998, and even then only on certain trims. The 1997 model year is a plain mechanical ignition. No chip in the key head. No transponder ring around the cylinder. Turn the key, the truck starts. That is it.
The dealer either did not know or did not care. Either way, she was about to pay for a service her truck does not need.
I pulled up with my Lishi HU54 pick/decoder and a handful of 164-R0479 blanks. Decoded her worn ignition cylinder, cut two fresh keys on my Triton Plus right in her driveway, and tested both in the ignition and both doors. Smooth turns, no hang-ups.
She held up her cracked original next to the new cuts and just shook her head. Two keys, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted for one.
