2000 Ford Ranger Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a woman in Thousand Oaks, over near Oakbrook Plaza. She had a 2000 Ford Ranger, single cab, XLT trim, and one working key left. Said her other key went through the wash and stopped working after that. She tried it a few times, got the engine to crank but it would cut right out. Theft light blinking away on the dash.
She called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in, leave it for the day, and they would order a blank if they did not have one. She did not want to lose the truck for a whole day over a key.
Her working key still started the Ranger fine, so I had a good path. The 2000 Ranger uses the PATS I system with the 4C transponder chip in an H72-PT blank. With one functioning key already present, you can run the two-key learning procedure through the PCM to add a new one. I cut the H72 on my Triton Plus right at her truck, matched it to the original, then ran the on-board programming sequence: existing key on, off, new key on, wait for the security light to go solid.
Tested both keys three times each, cold start every time. Whole thing took maybe twenty minutes.
She held up the washed key and asked if it was totally dead. I told her the transponder glass capsule inside probably cracked from the heat cycle in the dryer. She just looked at it and said, "I dried it on high." Then she laughed and put it in her pocket anyway, like a souvenir.
