2012 Ford Ranger
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2012 Ford Ranger Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the South Winds neighborhood had been driving on one key for two years. Not a big deal until it was.

She dropped it in a parking lot, heard it hit the asphalt, watched it slide under the car, and then watched it go somewhere she could not reach. Not the drain, not totally gone, just wedged somewhere behind a wheel well where she could not get to it without tools she did not own.

She called me standing next to the Ranger. I was already out in Oxnard, so the drive was short.

When I got there, she was half-crouched next to the rear tire still trying to spot it. I handed her a flashlight while I pulled the equipment out. The key eventually turned up, but it was bent at the bow, and the cut was still readable. At that point the smart move was to decode off the existing key, cut a fresh one, and get her a programmed spare so this never became a stranded situation.

I decoded the blade, cut a new transponder key on site, and programmed it to the truck through the OBD port. The whole job was done in the lot before she gave up on finding a better flashlight angle.

She asked about the dealer on the way out. I told her what the dealer route typically looks like for a key on a truck this age: scheduling, waiting, and a cost that lands noticeably higher. She nodded like she had already guessed that. The Ranger never left the street.
