Got a call from a guy out near the Ventura River Preserve. His 1999 Ranger was sitting in the gravel lot and his only key had finally given up. The blade was so worn it barely grabbed the wafers anymore, and the transponder was intermittent. The PATS module on these first-gen systems is pretty cooperative. Read the existing key data, programmed the new 4C transponder chip, verified the theft indicator went solid and then off. Clean start on the first turn.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. He sat on his tailgate and watched most of it. When the engine caught right away he just nodded, like he had been holding his breath for a week.
