I got a call from someone over in Dos Vientos, the quieter side of Thousand Oaks near the trailheads. She had a 2007 Ford Ranger and one key, which she'd been using as her only key for probably two years. It stopped unlocking the doors remotely, then one morning it didn't start the truck at all.

She'd already replaced the CR2032 herself, which was the right instinct. The fob started working again, but the truck still wouldn't start. That's when she called me. She thought the key was broken, or the truck had "locked itself out," as she put it.

When I got there, she had the one key and the truck was sitting in the driveway. I ran through the immobilizer side and found the key's transponder was no longer being recognized. The remote portion worked fine after the battery swap, but the ignition portion had lost its pairing. Happens more than people expect, especially on trucks that have been around this long.

I reprogrammed the key to the vehicle, verified the remote functions, and had her start it herself so she could confirm it. Took about 25 minutes at her car.

She asked me at the end if she should get a spare. I told her she really should, and we talked through what it would take. The dealer had quoted her something on the spare previously and she'd put it off because of the number. I told her mine would be a fraction of that. She said she'd call back. She did, two weeks later.
