2004 Ford Ranger
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does Ford require me to tow the Ranger to the dealer if I've lost all my keys?

That's what Ford's own documentation recommends when all programmed keys are gone, yes. They'll tell you to have it towed in, show up with ID and your registration, and wait for them to process the job. A mobile locksmith handles all-keys-lost on this truck on site. The programming is done through the OBD port at your vehicle. No tow, no waiting room, no scheduling around dealer service hours.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the Ranger before you'll make a key?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm everything matches before any cutting or programming starts. Same standard a dealer holds, just without the extra hoops. Dealers have been known to request additional documentation in certain situations, like a police report if a key was taken during a theft, or a rental agreement if the vehicle isn't personally owned.

Q: The truck starts fine but my remote stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The remote side and the start side of this key operate independently. If the truck cranks and runs without any warning on the dash, the transponder is doing its job. A dead or weak CR2032 is the most common reason the lock, unlock, and third button stop responding while starts stay normal. Swap the battery first. If range comes back, you're done.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

The remote portion of this key has a self-programming procedure that works as long as you have at least one working programmed key already in hand. It's a driver-door and ignition sequence that Ford included for this generation. Some owners have done it successfully following the steps in the owner's manual or on forums. The transponder side is a different story. That requires professional equipment to register a new key to the vehicle's immobilizer.

2004 Ford Ranger Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Lynn Ranch, a Ranger owner called me about a key that was barely holding together. The plastic head had cracked along the seam, the blade was loose, and she was palming the whole mess carefully every time she needed to start the truck. She'd already been to the dealer. They told her the only path forward was a full replacement key, cut and programmed from scratch.

What they didn't tell her was that everything inside her key, the transponder, the remote circuit board, all of it, was completely intact. The shell had failed. The electronics hadn't.

I pulled up to her driveway in Thousand Oaks with a replacement shell and my decoding tools. She watched me pop the housing, transfer the internals, and verify that the board seated correctly. Then I cut a fresh blade to match, walked her through testing every button, and confirmed the truck started without hesitation.

She went from "the dealer wants to do a whole new key" to "that's it, we're done" in under twenty minutes. She also left with a working spare, which she hadn't had in years. The dealer quote was still sitting in her phone when I drove away.

Ford Ranger Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare. Can you come to me in Thousand Oaks?▼

Yes. That's the whole point of what I do. Call me and I come to wherever the Ranger is sitting, whether that's a Lynn Ranch driveway or a parking lot across town. I carry the blanks and the tools to decode, cut, and program a key for this truck on site. You don't need a tow.
