My 2019 Ranger sometimes shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob is in my hand. What is going on?

Dead or low CR2450 is the most common reason. The fob signal gets weak before the battery reads as completely dead, so the truck loses confidence in the key intermittently rather than all at once.

Interference is the second one. Large metal surfaces, certain parking structures, and even some aftermarket accessories near the antenna can block the fob signal enough to throw a key-not-detected warning.

If the battery is fresh and it is still happening, the issue may be with fob enrollment losing integrity, which means the fob needs to be re-paired to the vehicle. That is a quick diagnostic port job. If it is happening only at one door handle and not the other, that points to the door handle sensor rather than the fob itself.

Do not ignore it and assume it will clear on its own. Intermittent warnings on this system tend to get worse before they get better.
