How Ford Flex Keys Changed Over the Years
Remote Head Key Era
This is where security got serious for the Flex. Your 2009 to 2012 model uses a remote head key with a Texas 4D63 transponder chip inside, paired with Ford's PATS immobilizer. Four buttons on the fob, a CR2032 battery, and on-board programming that keeps things straightforward when you have two working keys.
Flip Key Upgrade
This is where security got a cosmetic upgrade too. Ford switched your Flex to a flip key design with the blade folding into the fob, but the guts stayed the same: Texas 4D63 chip, PATS immobilizer, four buttons, CR2032 battery. On-board programming still works here if you have two originals, which keeps costs down.
Smart Key and Push-Button Start
This is where security jumped to a different level entirely. The 2017 to 2019 Flex moved to a smart key with proximity entry and push-button start on higher trims. The chip upgraded to a Texas 4D63 (80-bit) or ID47 HITAG Pro under Ford's newer PATS system, three buttons instead of four, and programming now requires OBD-II diagnostic tools. No more on-board shortcuts.
Which Key Does Your Ford Flex Use?
A chunky key with the remote buttons built right into the head. The blade sticks out permanently. You turn this in the ignition to start your Flex.
Same four buttons, but the blade folds into the fob body when you are not using it. Press the release button and the key flips out. Still a turn-key ignition.
A slim fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, and the doors unlock. Push the button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.

Common Ford Flex Key Problems
Transponder Programming Failure
Hardware-store clones do not work on Ford PATS. The system needs an original programmed transponder chip. If your only working key fails or a hardware copy will not start the Flex, call (805) 790-8162 and we program a proper key on-site.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Check the CR2032 first. A weak cell causes short range, intermittent lock/unlock, and phantom button presses. Pop the fob with a coin, drop a fresh CR2032 positive up. If the problem persists, the internal board may need replacing.
Security Light On (Immobilizer Issue)
Flex cranks but will not start, key icon lit on the dash. PATS immobilizer is not seeing the transponder chip. Common on 2009-2016 after a failed programming attempt or a key that took a hit. We read PATS and reprogram or cut on-site in Oxnard or Camarillo.
Can You Program a Ford Flex Key Yourself?
If you have two working original keys, you can add a third using Ford's PATS two-key procedure. Cycle the first key on and off, the second key within 10 seconds, then insert the new cut key within 20 seconds. The security light will glow for three seconds to confirm. Remote programming is separate: cycle the ignition 8 times in 8 seconds, then press a button on each fob. No working keys? That requires our OBD tools.
Same PATS two-key procedure applies here. Two original working keys let you add a new transponder key yourself. Remote programming also works the same way with the 8-cycle ignition method. Important: all remotes get erased during programming, so have every fob you own ready to reprogram in the same session.
The 2017 to 2019 smart key runs on PATS II with OBD-II programming. There is no on-board self-programming option. You need a locksmith with Ford-compatible diagnostic tools. We handle these on-site with our Autel IM608.

Did You Know?
Back in 2009, Ford did something unusual with the Flex's PATS system. They made it possible for owners to program up to 8 key fobs using a simple ignition cycling procedure, no tools required. Most manufacturers lock that behind a dealer visit or expensive diagnostic equipment. The Flex was one of the most owner-friendly vehicles Ford ever made when it came to key management.
