A woman near Proctor Street Plaza in Oxnard flagged me down in a grocery store parking lot. Not literally, but close. Her neighbor had my number saved and she called while standing next to her 2011 Ford Flex with one key that was falling apart.
The plastic housing on her 164-R8070 remote head key had cracked along the seam. She had been holding it together with a rubber band for a few weeks. The buttons still worked, but the blade was getting loose in the head and she was worried the transponder chip would stop making contact. She was right to worry. Once that 4D63 chip shifts position inside a broken shell, PATS gets intermittent reads and you start getting no-start conditions that look random.
I cut a fresh OUCD6000022 blank on site, programmed the 80-bit chip through the OBD-II port using the PATS security access sequence, and tested all three buttons: lock, unlock, trunk. Then I had her start it three times back to back because that is where intermittent chip issues show up.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. She said the dealer had quoted her a week's wait plus a number that made her put it off. Meanwhile she was driving around on a rubber-banded key, one hard drop away from being stranded. Sometimes the best call is the one you stop putting off.
