The road is narrow, the neighborhood sits right between the highway and the hillside, and a flatbed trying to maneuver in there draws attention fast. So when a Windstar owner out there called me because he had no working key and couldn't move the van, I already knew the dealer option wasn't really on the table.
He'd been quoted a wait at the dealer. Days out for an appointment, plus the car had to be drivable to get there. It wasn't. He had a key that would turn but the van wouldn't stay running, which is exactly what happens when the immobilizer doesn't recognize the chip. He thought the key was just worn out. I parked on PCH and walked over with my bag. Right there in his driveway, I cut a fresh key blade to match his locks, got the transponder enrolled through the OBD port, and built out the three-button remote head unit. Tested every button, verified the van started and stayed running without stalling, and walked him through the CR2032 swap so he'd know what to do in a few years when the remote range starts dropping.
The dealer comparison barely came up. He just needed the car to work, that day, without getting it towed anywhere. That's the whole job.
