Got a call from a guy over in the Juanamaria neighborhood in Ventura. His 2000 Windstar had been sitting in the driveway for two days because his only key would crank the engine but it would die after about a second. Classic PATS rejection. The theft indicator on the dash was flashing like a turn signal.
He had already called a Ford dealer. They told him to tow it in and leave it, maybe get to it by Thursday. He had three kids and one minivan and could not lose the car for three days.
I pulled up and started with the basics. Plugged into the OBD-II port under the dash and read the PCM. Got a P1260, which is PATS theft detected, and a B1601 for unprogrammed key. His original transponder chip had gone weak. The transceiver ring around the ignition column was reading intermittently.
Cut a new H72-PT blank to code, matched the mechanical to his existing key with my Lishi HU101 decode, and started the PATS programming sequence. The system ran its 10-minute security timer. Then the second 10-minute wait. Standard for an all-keys-lost situation on these, since his original key had dropped out of memory.
After both timers cleared, the new key fired the 3.8L V6 on the first turn. Programmed a spare while I was there. He stood in his driveway holding two working keys, and his van never left the neighborhood.
