Got a call from a mom over in Pleasant Valley Fields in Oxnard. She was at school pickup with a 1998 Ford Windstar, two kids buckled in the back, and a remote that had gone through the wash. Buttons did nothing. Doors, hatch, panic, all dead.
The thing people miss on these Windstars is that the remote and the ignition key are separate systems. Her transponder key still turned the engine over fine because PATS didn't care about the remote. On these 98 Windstars the remote learn procedure is a timed ignition cycle, not an OBD tool job. Whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes.
I told her to let the washed remote sit and dry out, but honestly, water and the circuit board on these older Motorola remotes usually means corrosion on the traces. Probably done.
She pulled out of that lot with all five buttons working and made her next stop on time. The dealer had quoted her Friday. It was Wednesday.
