A guy near the Saticoy area in Ventura texted me a GPS pin. Trailhead. Dirt lot. His 2002 Windstar was sitting there and his only key had slipped out of his pocket somewhere on the trail behind him.
No dealer close. No shop nearby. His van wasn't going to a tow truck on that road anyway.
I loaded up the Ford blanks and headed out. His Windstar uses the PATS 2 system with the 4D63 40-bit transponder, and the key blank is an H75 profile, nothing exotic. I decoded the lock wafers right on the door, cut the H75 blade on the mobile machine in my van, then moved to the immobilizer side. Connected my programmer through the OBD-II port, read the PATS module, erased the lost key, and wrote the new transponder in.
The 10-minute security timer ran while we stood there watching hawks circle the ridge. Ford bakes that countdown into every PATS reprogram, dealer or not. No skipping it.
After the timer cleared, the Windstar fired right up in that same dirt lot. He just stood there looking at the key like he expected a catch.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes from the time I pulled in. A dealer would have meant a tow plus a wait that could stretch weeks for an appointment. He drove home instead.
