2006 Ford Freestar Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A mechanic shop over in Peninsula Park in Oxnard called me about a 2006 Freestar that another locksmith had already walked away from. Classic all-keys-lost job that went sideways.
The other tech started programming, and the van's battery dropped voltage mid-handshake with the body control module. On these Freestars, the BCM is part number 5F2T-15604-AN, and when it loses power during a PATS security learn sequence, it can latch into a fault state. The theft indicator starts blinking fast, the "Theft" light stays solid on the cluster, and the engine cranks but won't catch. Some techs see that and call a tow truck.
I hooked my jump pack to the battery posts first. Non-negotiable step on any Freestar with a tired battery. Cleared the DTCs with my IM608, including the B1601 and B1213 PATS codes the failed attempt left behind. Then I ran a clean all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD-II port. The OUCD6000022 fob learned on the first cycle. Cut the H75 blade on site, tested all three buttons, ran two full start-and-shutdown cycles.
The shop guys watched the whole thing. I walked them through why voltage matters during a PATS learn so they'd know to mention it if a customer ever showed up with a weak battery and a key job on the schedule.
Took about an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal single-key program. But it beat a flatbed ride to the dealer and a multi-day wait by a long stretch.
