It was a Tuesday in July, Channel Islands Harbor side of Oxnard. A woman called me from a parking lot saying her Freestar wouldn't start and she had groceries in the van. Frozen stuff. She had maybe 30 minutes before the ice cream situation became a real problem.
She'd already called the dealer. They told her tomorrow afternoon was the earliest they could see it. I told her I was about 20 minutes out.
When I got there, she handed me the key and I could see right away it had been copied at some point. Someone had taken a hardware-store cut to a locksmith or a kiosk, and whoever did it either didn't know or didn't say anything about the transponder. The cut was fine. The chip situation was not.
I pulled out my equipment, connected at the OBD port, and got a new transponder key cut to the vehicle and programmed into the immobilizer on-site. Then I walked her through the self-programming sequence so she'd have a backup procedure in her phone if she ever picked up a spare key.
Engine started clean on the first turn. She loaded back in, backed out, and was gone. Groceries made it. The dealer appointment was already forgotten.
