2004 Ford Freestar Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Point Mugu State Park in Oxnard, a woman had her 2004 Ford Freestar loaded with bags from a grocery run. It was July and the frozen stuff in the back seat had maybe thirty minutes before it turned into soup.

Her key just stopped working. She could turn the ignition, the engine would crank for a beat, then die. The theft indicator on the dash stayed lit solid, which is the classic PATS rejection. She tried it four or five more times. Same thing every time. Crank, die, theft light.

She called the dealer. Earliest they could get her in was the next afternoon. Then she called me. I was about twenty minutes out.

When I got there I checked the key first. The transponder chip inside the H86 key head had cracked. Hairline, but enough that the PATS transceiver ring wasn't reading the 4D-63 signal anymore. I cut a new H86 blade, seated a fresh 4D-63 80-bit chip, plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash, and ran the PATS key learn procedure through the PCM.

Tested the start three times. Theft light flickered and went out each time, which is what you want to see. Doors locked and unlocked clean from the remote head.

From her phone call to her engine running was under 45 minutes. The groceries survived. Sometimes the difference between a locksmith and a dealer is just timing.
