Got a call from a woman in the CSU Channel Islands area in Camarillo. She had a 2001 Ford Explorer, one key left, and it had gone through the washing machine in a jacket pocket. She tried it wet. Nothing. The PATS light on the dash just blinked at her and the engine cranked but would not catch.
She had two kids in the back seat and somewhere to be in about two hours. Called the Ford dealer. They told her Friday at the earliest. It was Wednesday.
I pulled into the parking lot, opened up my tools on the hood, and connected the Smart Pro to the OBD-II port under the dash. The 2001 Explorer uses a PATS II system, so programming a new OUCD6000022 remote head key means writing the new 4D63 transponder to the PCM and then pairing the remote side. The whole sequence took about 20 minutes. Cut the blade on site, programmed the chip, synced the three-button remote. Lock, unlock, panic, all responding clean.
I told her to toss the washed key in a bag of rice for a couple days. Sometimes the board dries out and the remote side comes back. The transponder chip itself usually survives water. But do not count on it as your only key.
She pulled out of the lot with both kids strapped in and made her next stop on time. The dealer would have meant a tow, a three-day wait, and a lot more money. She got it handled in a parking lot in under an hour for a fraction of that.
