2003 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A Mission Oaks resident called me on a Tuesday morning. He was parked in his own driveway, had a working key, but the remote buttons on his remote head key had gone completely dead. He'd already done the battery swap himself. New CR2032, correct orientation, still nothing. His wife was borrowing the spare, so he was down to one key with no remote function and a commute starting in two hours.

I pulled up to the house about 40 minutes after he called.

First thing I did was open the fob housing right there on the hood. His CR2032 was seated fine but the positive contact had a slight outward bow to it, just enough to break clean contact. Took about 90 seconds to correct that and reseat everything. Tested the buttons. Nothing. At that point the remote was either frequency-synced out or it had lost its programming during the battery swap, which happens on these when the contacts arc briefly during the swap and the fob loses its stored code.

Plugged into the OBD port and re-synced the remote to the vehicle. All three buttons came back. Tested lock, unlock, and the third button from the end of the driveway. Solid range, solid response.

He asked why the battery swap could knock out the programming. I told him it's a known quirk on these remote head keys. The fob doesn't always hold its sync through a power interruption if the contacts separate a certain way. Not every swap causes it, but it happens often enough that I mention it when I explain pricing.

The whole job was done before he had to leave. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting room.
