Got a call from a guy near the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum in Camarillo. His 2003 Explorer had one working key, and the remote buttons had been dead for months. He swapped the CR2032 himself over the weekend, and after that, the car wouldn't start at all. Just the flashing theft light on the dash, steady blink, no crank.
What happened is pretty common on these third-gen Explorers. He pried the fob apart with a screwdriver instead of separating it at the seam, and the transponder board shifted inside the housing. The 4D-63 chip sits on a small circuit board in the key head, and it had moved just far enough from the PATS antenna ring that the system couldn't read it. Theft light stays solid for two seconds then starts blinking means no transponder detected.
I got to his location on my lunch route. Opened the fob on his tailgate, reseated the transponder board, confirmed the 4D-63 was reading with my diagnostic tool through the OBD-II port. PATS accepted it on the first try. Then I cut and programmed a spare OUCD6000022 so he'd have a backup. The system ran its 10-minute security access timer, registered the second key, and both tested clean on all three buttons plus start.
He thought he'd killed the key. Turned out it just needed to be put back together right.
