A dad on the Tapo Canyon Road corridor in Simi Valley called the dealer on a Monday morning. His 2011 Explorer needed a replacement smart key and they told him Thursday at the earliest. I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD-II port and ran the PATS parameter reset for the fifth-gen Explorer. The security access handshake on these takes a timed countdown, about ten minutes where you just wait while the module does its thing. Not dramatic, just slow.
While that ran, I cut the HU101 emergency blade and built out the M3N5WY8609 fob. Five-button proximity key: lock, unlock, hatch, remote start, panic. Once the PATS reset cleared, I registered the new fob to the powertrain control module and tested every function at the door handles, at the dash button, and with the backup blade in the column slot.
He picked up his kid that afternoon like nothing happened. The whole job took about 40 minutes. The dealer route would have been days and a tow on top of a bigger bill.
