A remote head key combines the key blade and the fob into a single unit. The blade cuts into the ignition cylinder the same way any metal key does. 2007 Ford Explorer Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman near the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo called me on a weekday morning. She'd been out to a work event the night before, parked along one of the surface lots off the main boulevard, and came back to an Explorer that wouldn't respond to anything. Doors stayed locked. Fob was dead silent.

She had her metal key blade with her - but the blade is part of the remote head key unit, not a separate piece. She knew that. What she didn't know was whether the car itself had lost her key from memory or whether the fob battery was just gone.

I got there and the first thing I did was try the blade in the door lock cylinder. Got in that way. Then I pulled the fob apart right there on the hood. CR2032 was reading nearly zero on my tester. Swapped it, seated the battery correctly, and the fob lit back up immediately - locks, unlocks, the works.

The car started fine on the first turn. The immobilizer had never dropped her key from memory. The fob just had nothing left to transmit with.

She asked if she needed a reprogram after a dead battery. On this generation, no. The key stays enrolled in the vehicle even when the fob battery goes fully flat. The battery powers the remote functions only. The ignition side is separate.

She was back on the road inside twenty minutes. She mentioned she'd almost called the dealer first. Thursday was the earliest they could see her.
