2019 Ford Explorer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2019 Explorer?

A properly programmed key with a quality shell and a fresh CR2450 should last as long as you own the vehicle. The programming stored in the car's security system doesn't expire or degrade. What does wear out over time: the rubber button pads, the battery, and occasionally the shell itself from being dropped. We install a fresh battery with every key.

Q: The new key stopped working a few weeks after I got it. What's going on?

Call us. Everything we program is covered under warranty. That said, when a correctly programmed fob stops working on a 2019 Explorer, the fob itself is usually not the problem. A few things show up repeatedly on Explorer forums: a blown fuse affecting the keyless entry receiver, a software issue that can follow a module update, and in rarer cases the vehicle's security system entering a lockout state after repeated failed start attempts, which needs diagnostic equipment to clear.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2019 Explorer. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I actually lose it?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on a 2019 Explorer smart key is a significantly longer job than add-a-key, and it costs more too. When you have even one working fob present, the process is faster and simpler. If you lose that last key, the security system has to be fully reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be registered. That reset involves a timed sequence that can't be rushed.

Q: My 2019 Explorer shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What should I check first?

Battery type first. The 2019 Explorer smart key takes a CR2450, not a CR2032. They look similar at a glance but the CR2450 is thicker, and if someone installed the wrong size it may seem seated but won't make consistent contact. Check what's actually in there. If the battery type is correct, try holding the fob closer to the start button when you press it.

2019 Ford Explorer Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in the Big Sky area of Simi Valley when the call came in. Explorer owner, needed a spare key made while she still had a working fob. She'd texted me the VIN before I even turned around, which is exactly how these jobs go smoothly.

By the time I pulled up, I already knew the fob configuration, had the right blank pulled, and knew we were doing an add-a-key, not an all-keys-lost. That distinction matters. Add-a-key with a working fob on site is faster, cleaner, and skips the longer reset sequence entirely.

I set up on the hood of my van while she waited on the sidewalk. Cut the blade to her vehicle, confirmed the working fob was reading correctly through my equipment, registered the new fob to the car's security system, and ran through every button. Lock, unlock, all five. Then I handed it to her and had her walk to the other side of the Explorer and test it herself, because I'd rather she find a problem in front of me than in a parking lot in two weeks.

Everything worked first try.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment, plus the cost of the key on top of labor. She got this done between errands, start to finish, without driving anywhere.

That's the version of this job I like the most.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2019 Explorer?▼

We use verified blanks that match the factory FCC ID and radio frequency for this exact fob. That last part matters more than most people realize. The 2019 Explorer smart key operates at a specific frequency, and there are aftermarket blanks floating around that are close but not quite right. They'll lock and unlock the doors just fine over short range, which tricks people into thinking the fob is good.
