Can I buy a replacement remote head key online and program it myself?

The remote side, the lock and unlock functions, can sometimes be self-programmed on this generation using an onboard sequence that involves cycling the ignition and door locks in a specific order. Some 2004 Explorer owners have had success with it for the remote portion alone.

The transponder side is a different story. That requires professional programming equipment to enroll the chip. You can't do it with a button sequence.
