My van carries everything. Key cutting machine bolted to the floor, transponder programmer, a full stock of blanks and remote head housings, CR2032 cells, the whole setup. I don't need a shop because the van is the shop.

Someone in Leisure Village called me from an underground parking structure on a Saturday. His 2004 Explorer was sitting on the lower level, tight ceiling, tight turns, no way a flatbed was squeezing in there. He'd already called a tow company. The job itself was the easy part. Cut a replacement blade to match his locks, programmed the transponder, assembled the three-button remote head key using a housing matched to the factory fob, and tested every function right there under the fluorescent lights of that garage. Lock, unlock, the third button, and the ignition. All of it worked before I packed my tools.

He drove out about forty minutes after I walked in. The dealer was never part of the equation again, and he saved a good chunk compared to what they quoted, assuming he could have gotten the car there at all.

That last part was the real problem the dealer solved for him: nothing.
