1999 Ford Explorer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

1999 Ford Explorer Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in the River Park/Wagon Wheel area had one key left for her 1999 Explorer. Not a great position to be in.

The bow of the key had a crack running toward the transponder housing and she knew it was only a matter of time. She'd already called the dealer. They told her to come in, quoted her a price that made her pause, and put her on a schedule that didn't work with her week.

She found me, called, and I was at her parking spot off Wagon Wheel within the hour.

The original key was still turning, which mattered. On these early Ford systems, having at least one working key opens up a faster path. I cut the new blade to match, confirmed the transponder chip in the original was still being read correctly by the ignition coil, then ran through the programming sequence. The car accepted the new key without a fight.

I had her test it herself: start the car, shut it off, start it again with the new key alone, no original anywhere nearby. It fired every time. That's the test that matters. A key that programs but only starts in the presence of the old one is a problem you want to catch right there in the lot, not in your driveway two weeks later.

She kept the cracked original as a backup, which is exactly what I'd tell anyone to do. Two working keys on a vehicle this age is not a luxury.
