A restaurant owner near Hammonds Beach in Montecito called me about his 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Same story I hear a lot: bought it used with one key, always planned to get a spare, never did.
He dropped the fob on his driveway and the shell cracked on the concrete. The case split apart, the HU101 emergency blade popped loose, and the circuit board was sitting out in the open. No backup key anywhere.
I drove out and checked the board first. The 80-bit PATS transponder chip was still soldered tight, no cracked traces, no water damage. That meant I could skip the full all-keys-lost erase and reprogram. I moved the working PCB into a new CWTWB1U793 shell, cut a fresh HU101 blade by decoding his door lock, and tested the transponder match against his PATS module. Started right up.
Then I programmed him a second key from scratch so he would not be back in this situation. Two-key add on the 80-bit system is quicker than AKL because the car already recognizes one valid transponder and you skip the three security timer cycles.
He went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes, right there in his driveway. If your fob cracks but the board survives, bring the pieces. It can save you real time and a good chunk of money compared to starting from nothing.
