2017 Lincoln MKT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my Lincoln so it no longer starts the car?

Yes. When we run an all-keys-lost procedure, the immobilizer clears every key it had stored. Only the fobs physically present during that session get written back in. Anything that wasn't there, lost, stolen, or just old, is gone from the system and won't start the vehicle. If you think a fob walked off with someone, this is the clean way to handle it. Takes about the same time as a standard programming job.

Q: Does my 2017 Lincoln MKT smart fob have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

Yes. Press the small release tab and the metal blade slides out. That blade fits the driver door lock cylinder, tucked behind a small cover on the door handle surround. Pop the cover, insert the blade, and you are in even with a completely dead fob battery or an unresponsive proximity system. Worth locating that cylinder before you need it at 10pm. If your blade is worn, broken, or missing, I can cut a replacement to your vehicle.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my MKT. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2017 MKT smart key system does not have an owner-accessible self-programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn cycle, no button combo, no sequence you can do in the driveway. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires a professional tool connected to the diagnostic port. If you've already bought a fob, that's fine. Bring it or have it ready when I arrive. As long as the blank is the correct type for this application, I can program it.

Q: My MKT start button works but the door handle touch unlock stopped responding. Is it the fob or something else?

If the start button still sees the fob normally, the key itself is probably fine. The touch-unlock handles on these Lincolns have their own antenna and sensor, separate from the start circuit. When one handle stops responding while others still work, the issue is usually isolated to that door's sensor or the wiring behind it. Before going further, wipe the handle area down and make sure nothing is blocking the sensor zone.

2017 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Botanic Garden Area in Thousand Oaks, I got a call from a guy who had already been to the dealer. Not for a quote. He'd actually sat in the waiting room, gotten the paperwork, and walked out when he saw the total for a spare smart key for his 2017 Lincoln MKT.

He found me online that same afternoon.

His original fob was fine. He just wanted a working spare for his wife, who had started sharing the car for her commute. Simple job on paper.

I pulled up outside, popped the van, and we went through the usual conversation about OEM versus quality aftermarket. He'd done some reading and was already skeptical of cheap fobs. Fair. The cut-rate blanks with inconsistent electronics are a real problem on Ford and Lincoln proximity systems. I've tested enough batches to know which sources hold up and which ones throw intermittent key-not-detected warnings six weeks later.

The blank I carry for this application uses the correct transponder chip for the MKT's security system and matches the factory fob's button layout and weight. The key blade fits the door cylinder. Programming went through the diagnostic port cleanly, first attempt. I walked every button, tested the touch-unlock on both front handles, and confirmed the start button saw the new fob from inside the cabin.

He held both fobs and said they felt identical. That was the point.

The dealer's number was still on the paperwork sitting in his cup holder. What he paid me was a fraction of that. He didn't mention it again after I handed him the fob. Some things speak for themselves.

Lincoln MKT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2017 Lincoln MKT?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. All-keys-lost on a smart key Lincoln is a longer job than a simple spare, because the security system has to be cleared and the new fob registered from scratch. Dealers will quote you for the fob, the programming labor, and the key code pull, and if your car isn't drivable you're adding a tow on top of that.
