Got a call from a guy over in the Westlake Village area of Thousand Oaks. His 2013 Lincoln MKT, the EcoBoost AWD, was sitting in his driveway with zero working keys. His only fob had fallen out of his shorts pocket at a rec league basketball game at the courts nearby. Gone.
He already called the dealer. They told him to get it towed in and wait for a parts order. He wasn't doing that.
I pulled up, verified ownership, decoded the door lock, and cut the emergency insert blade for the new fob. Then I plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. On the 2013 MKT, the Body Control Module (part of Ford's BCM architecture on the D4 platform) handles key registration through PATS. Security access on these has a timed handshake, not the old three-cycle 10-minute wait from earlier PATS generations, but it still makes you sit there while the tool talks to the BCM.
Once the M3N-5WY8609 was registered, I tested everything. Not just a start. Lock, unlock, remote trunk, panic, Intelligent Access walk-up unlock on both front doors and the trunk. I walked back 30 feet and hit lock and unlock again. Started it three times in a row watching the theft indicator on the dash. Proper behavior is a brief flash at ignition, then it goes dark and stays dark. A fast continuous blink means the key didn't take.
He stood there watching the whole time. When every function checked out, he just nodded. No drama. That's how it should go.
