Got a call from a guy out near the Ojai Valley Trail. He had a 2003 Jeep Liberty parked at the trailhead and his only key had snapped right at the bow, the plastic head cracked and the blade separated clean off. He said he tried jamming it back together, turning the ignition with pliers on the bare blade. The engine cranked but the SKIS killed it after two seconds. Classic immobilizer rejection. No transponder near the column, no start.
He was sitting on the tailgate when I pulled up. Had the two broken halves wrapped in a napkin like evidence.
I decoded his door lock cylinder with my Y160 Lishi, cut a fresh BY160-PT blank, and cloned the ID46 chip from the broken key head since the transponder module inside was still intact. Held it right up to my programmer and it read clean on the first pass. Once the clone was written, I tested ignition, let it run for a full minute, cycled it off and back on. Fired right up both times.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes. He asked if the old broken key still works if he glues it. Technically yes, the chip is still registered. But I told him a glued key is a future broken key, and next time the chip might not survive the snap.
He drove off toward the trail with a solid key and no wasted afternoon at a dealer parts counter.
