I was out in Matilija one afternoon, the kind of quiet neighborhood where you can hear the creek if the wind's right. A woman had called about a spare key for her 2006 Liberty. She still had her original, it still worked, but she'd been meaning to get a backup cut and programmed for months and kept putting it off. She finally stopped putting it off after locking her only working key inside the car at a trailhead.

I pulled the door lock cylinder to read the cut, then put the blade together on the blank, checked it against the existing key, and ran it on the cutting machine. Clean cut. Then I connected to the OBD port, got into the immobilizer system on my programmer, and walked through the key learning sequence. The 2006 Liberty will accept additional keys while the original is still in the system, so I didn't have to do an all-keys-lost procedure. That kept the job tidy and fast.
Once the new key was paired, I handed it to her and had her do the test herself. Lock, unlock, start. She turned the ignition three times back to back just because she could. The remote worked from the far end of the driveway.
She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her it wouldn't have been close to what she paid me, and it would have taken a few days on top of that. She just nodded like she'd already suspected as much.
