How Grand Cherokee Keys Changed Over 30 Years
ZJ: Pure Mechanical
Your first-gen Grand Cherokee uses a simple metal key with no chip inside. No transponder, no immobilizer, no programming needed. We cut it on the spot and you drive away. These are as straightforward as car keys get.
WJ: Sentry Key Arrives
Your second-gen Grand Cherokee uses an ID46 transponder chip and Jeep's Sentry Key Immobilizer Module, called SKIM. That means the key has to talk to your vehicle's computer before the engine will turn over. We program it through your OBD-II port, which is the diagnostic connector under your dash. Takes about 20 minutes in your driveway.
WK: Remote Head Key
Your third-gen switched to an ID46 (PCF7936) chip and a remote head key, meaning the buttons and the transponder are built into one unit. Still uses the SKIM system, still programmed through OBD-II. We need a Chrysler PIN code pulled from your VIN, which we handle on-site with our tools.
WK2: Flip Key and Proximity
Your fourth-gen Grand Cherokee uses an ID46 chip inside a flip key with a high-security laser-cut blade. The immobilizer upgraded to the RF HUB and SKREEM module, and higher trims got push-button start with proximity fobs. Programming requires OBD-II plus server authentication on newer years. We handle all of it on-site.
WL: Smart Key Only
Your fifth-gen Grand Cherokee went fully keyless with a smart proximity fob and a rechargeable battery inside. The security system uses advanced RF encryption that requires dealer server authentication. We cannot program these on-site, and we will tell you that upfront before we roll out. We can still get you into the vehicle if you are locked out.
Which Key Does Your Grand Cherokee Use?
A plain metal key with no electronics. No chip, no buttons, no battery to worry about.
A plastic-head key with a hidden chip inside and three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. Uses a CR2032 battery for the remote functions.
The key blade and remote buttons are combined into one unit. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 battery.
A five-button flip key with a laser-cut high-security blade that folds into the fob. Higher trims use a proximity fob for push-button start. Both use a CR2032 battery.
A fully keyless smart fob with five buttons and a rechargeable internal battery. No physical blade. Your Grand Cherokee detects it in your pocket and unlocks automatically.

Common Grand Cherokee Key Problems
SKIM Module Failure
First check on a no-start 1999-2010 Grand Cherokee is the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module. SKIM sits near the ignition and reads the chip. If it dies, the engine cranks but refuses to start with a good key. We diagnose on-site, module-vs-key in one visit.
Transponder Chip Wear
Owners blame the ignition when a 2005-2021 Grand Cherokee starts intermittently. Real culprit is usually a transponder chip wearing out. Signal weakens, immobilizer reads it some days, not others. New key with a fresh chip solves it.
RF Hub Synchronization Loss
Your 2011-2021 Grand Cherokee suddenly stops responding to both fobs. Press unlock, nothing. Press lock, nothing. RF Hub lost sync with your fobs, one of the most common calls from Simi Valley and Camarillo. We run a relearn with our scan tool.
Prox Sensor Failure
Passive entry sensors in the door handles detect the fob and unlock. When they fail on a 2011-2025 Grand Cherokee, it feels like a dead fob, but swapping changes nothing. Usually a wiring issue at the door handle, not the fob. We test the fob first to confirm.
Can You Program a Grand Cherokee Key Yourself?
You can program the remote keyless entry fob yourself using the ignition and door cylinder lever. No special tools needed. This only programs the remote buttons; the key itself is mechanical and just needs to be cut.
If you already have two working Sentry Keys, you can program a third one yourself using Jeep's Customer Learn Mode. You cycle the two existing keys in the ignition within specific time windows, then insert the new blank. The SKIS light on your dash confirms success. You cannot do this with fewer than two working keys.
No self-programming option for this generation. The WK requires a diagnostic programmer and a Chrysler PIN code pulled from your VIN. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.
The WK2's advanced immobilizer with RF HUB and SKREEM module requires professional OBD-II programming and server authentication. No DIY path here. We bring the tools to you.
The fifth-gen Grand Cherokee requires dealer server authentication. We cannot program these on-site either. We are upfront about that so you do not waste time or money.

Did You Know?
Back in 1995, Jeep did something no other SUV manufacturer had pulled off. The ZJ Grand Cherokee became the first SUV ever to earn a five-star frontal crash safety rating from NHTSA. That rating helped reshape how the entire industry thought about SUV safety, pushing competitors to catch up for years afterward.
