Out in Las Posas Estates, a guy called me from the dirt pullout on a trail road just outside Camarillo. He had taken his 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee out for a weekend run and somewhere between the trailhead and the overlook, his key disappeared. Pocket must have been open. He checked the ground, retraced about a quarter mile, nothing.

He called a locksmith before he called me. That locksmith told him the ignition cylinder would probably need to be drilled and replaced, and the quote reflected that. He called me for a second opinion.

I drove out to him. The first thing I did was decode the door lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions inside the cylinder without touching anything destructive. That gave me the exact cut pattern. I cut a fresh key blade to those specs on the spot.

Then came the transponder side. On a vehicle this age, the immobilizer communicates through the OBD port cleanly. I accessed the system, cleared the lost key from memory, and enrolled the new transponder. Turned the key, engine came up, immobilizer light went off and stayed off.

His lock cylinder was fine. His ignition housing was fine. Everything the other locksmith wanted to replace was still sitting there untouched. He drove home the same afternoon.

The dealer comparison barely came up. He was just glad the first quote was not the only option he had.
